Charles Dana Graduate Fellowships

The Brain Science Program has funding available to support two one semester graduate fellowships during the 2007-2008 academic year.  The Charles Dana Graduate Fellowships will support the stipend and fees of Ph.D. students pursuing interdisciplinary training in brain science.

Charles Dana Graduate Fellowships typically support the 2nd year spring semester or 3rd year fall semester of a Ph.D. student interested in taking at least two courses outside their home graduate program curriculum. In particular, the curriculum should be designed to help students link the life sciences
(molecular, cellular, systems, or behavioral) and the physical sciences (mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry or engineering). In some cases, one course in addition to an interdisciplinary research experience will also qualify (for instance, a laboratory rotation outside the home graduate program to learn a specific method). The fellowship is designed to support students who would otherwise receive support from a research grant, rather than individuals who would otherwise receive support from the University or the Division of Biology and Medicine.

To apply, students should submit a one-page description of the
interdisciplinary nature of their research interests and a description of the courses they intend to take during the semester. In addition, applications must include a one-page statement of support from the faculty sponsor that describes how the student's course of study during the semester will advance their pursuit of interdisciplinary brain research and augment their training. Applications will be reviewed by a committee composed of
physical and life science faculty and will be judged based on innovation and creativity in the interdisciplinary research project and how strongly the proposed semester activities support the student's training goals.

Depending on the applicant pool and available funding, the Brain Science Program may elect to award partial support or to support a larger number of students.

The deadline for applications is June 1, 2007. Submit applications to Urmi_Trivedi@brown.edu.
